Commercial refrigeration on the Northern Beaches wears out faster than the same equipment would a few kilometres inland, and the reason is salt. Airborne salt corrodes the aluminium fins and copper tubing of condenser coils, and a corroded coil cannot reject heat properly, so the system works harder for the same cooling and fails earlier. For beachfront venues this is the single biggest factor in equipment life.
What the salt actually does
Condenser coils are built from thin aluminium fins bonded to copper tube, which is excellent at moving heat and poor at resisting corrosion. Salt deposits hold moisture against that junction and attack it, eating away fin material and breaking the contact between fin and tube. Both effects reduce how much heat the coil can shed.
The part that catches people out is that it does not look broken. A corroded coil still runs. The unit still makes cold. It is just doing so with a fraction of the heat rejection it was designed for, which means longer run times, higher head pressures, more compressor wear and a steadily climbing power bill.
How much difference does distance make?
A great deal, and over surprisingly short distances. Front-line positions at Collaroy, Narrabeen, Freshwater and Avalon Beach take direct salt-laden onshore wind. A few streets back, exposure drops off considerably. Inland areas like Frenchs Forest and Belrose see very little salt attack at all, though they trade it for bushland debris and dust packing into coils instead.
This is worth knowing when you are weighing a repair against a replacement, or deciding where to position new plant. Two identical units installed on the same day at Newport and at Frenchs Forest will not be in the same condition in five years.
What actually helps
- Rinse external coils with fresh water: the most effective thing available, and the most neglected. Regular rinsing removes salt deposits before they establish. It costs almost nothing and materially extends coil life.
- Shorten service intervals for exposed equipment: a beachfront condenser genuinely needs more attention than an inland one. Treating them the same is how exposed units quietly fall behind.
- Think about position: plant sheltered from direct onshore wind, or set back from the most exposed face of a building, lasts meaningfully longer. This is worth considering at installation, when it is free.
- Ask about coated coils when replacing: corrosion-resistant coil coatings cost more up front and are often worth it in a front-line position. Worth raising when you are specifying replacement equipment rather than after.
- Check fin condition, not just cleanliness: a coil can be clean and still be corroded through. Whitish powdery deposits and fins that crumble are damage, not dirt, and they do not wash off.
The practical upshot
If your venue is close to the water, assume your refrigeration is ageing faster than the manufacturer expected and plan accordingly. That means inspecting external plant more often than a textbook interval suggests, rinsing coils as routine rather than as a special job, and factoring shorter equipment life into replacement planning rather than being surprised by it.
None of this is avoidable on this coastline. It is entirely manageable, though, and the venues that manage it get years more out of the same equipment than the ones that do not.
